Are the Chemicals Safe for my Pets? (cats, dogs and fish)
As a general rule, the premises must be vacated during insect control treatments until the treatment materials are dry for a minimum period of three hours. Pets should be removed from the property (including caged birds) and all pet food and water should be removed from the floor. Fish tanks need to be well covered and the pump must be turned off.

How Long will the Treatment Last?
At CritterKill we guarantee our treatments for up to three months unless advised otherwise and depending on the severity of your infestation or problem. As there is no miracle cure, some pests may require follow up treatment by us. Ant's, German Cockroaches and Rodents typically require regular treatment and management. Ants may persist for up to 10 days after treatment.
Gisborne Cockroaches may be active for up to one week after treatment and German Cockroaches may still remain in low numbers for one to two weeks after treatment.
It is not possible to stop all Flies from entering a house after treatment and some treatment may be more effective than others depending on the location of the premises, climate and house design.
Treatments are designed to flush out pests from their harborages and it may appear as though you have a sudden influx of the pest problem, however the opposite is the case and the residual nature of the products used will provide ongoing coverage.
Cockroach Control
The two most common Cockroaches in New Zealand are the German Cockroach and the Gisborne Cockroach, otherwise known as the “Native” Cockroach.
German Cockroaches are a light brown colour and tend to infest kitchens, appliances and areas that are warm with moisture. They may remain in low numbers for one to two weeks after treatment.
Gisborne or “Native” Cockroaches are large dark insects that usually inhabit external areas such as bark gardens, vegetation, woodpiles and under decks. They gain entry via doors, windows or “hitchhike” their way inside boxes or other such items. They may still be active for up to one week after treatment.
Treatment Preparation-German Cockroaches Only:
Prior to our technician arriving, the following preparation may be recommended.
Kitchen: Should you have a serious infestation of German Cockroaches, you may be required to empty the kitchen cupboards of all food items and also remove cooking utensils, cups, plates etc. These should be placed in a separate area or room or separate dining area on a table NOT on the kitchen bench or near the area of infestation.
Bait and/or traps may be left in areas of the infestation. A non-repellent spray may also be applied in and around cupboards in the area of infestation. Our general treatment is designed to prevent Cockroaches from entry into your home via doors, windows and plumbing gaps.
Post treatment: DO NOT wipe the cupboards clean, as this will remove the treatment. Dead Cockroaches must be swept up or vacuumed. Failure to do this will compromise the treatment. German Cockroaches thrive off warm, dark and damp areas where there is lots of food. So it is important to keep areas such as behind fridges, freezers, utilities cupboards and dishwashers clean and inspect regularly.
Flea & Carpet Beetle Control
The “cat flea” is one of the most prevalent fleas in the world. It is primarily hosted by the domestic cat but can also live on other pets. The cat flea is about 2mm long with a flat body and can appear red in colour when full of blood. Cat fleas have chewing mouthparts and feed on organic debris as well as dried adult fecal blood. Fleas can also enter buildings that do not have pets and can jump about 15cm so can enter on clothing and shoes etc.
After each blood meal a female cat flea lays eggs on a host animal or in its hosts bedding area. Eggs are tiny white ovals about .5mm long and take 1-12 days to hatch. They may fall or be shaken off into small crevices where the host animal sleeps or spends time. Larvae need high humidity to hatch and go through 3 stages of up to 2 weeks to several months.
Pupae last 4-14 days up to 1 year. The pre emerged adult stays in the cocoon for up to 20 weeks protected from pesticides. Adult fleas look for a blood meal upon emerging but can survive for several months. Once they find a host they feed mate and lay eggs and can live up to 12 months.
Treatment Preparation: Prior to our technician arriving, the following preparation is recommended:
Clear and Vacuum all Carpets: To ensure that you get the best outcome from your treatment you should clear and vacuum all carpets prior to our technician arriving. A solution will be sprayed onto all floor surfaces including skirting boards.
Cats and other Pets should also be Treated with a Good Quality Flea Treatment on or about the same day as your treatment. Failure to do this will potentially allow the fleas at different stages of the life cycle to hatch etc. Treatments will not kill the eggs. The treatment does however contain residual products that will kill the hatched fleas for many weeks after the initial treatment.
Post Treatment: For your safety you must vacate your home for at least 3 hours. DO NOT vacuum your carpet for at least 5 days. Ensure no person, especially young children, walks, plays or crawl on the treated carpet for at least 5 days. Clean and Treat all Pets Blankets and Bedding, this will ensure that re infestation does not occur.
Wasp Control
NZ has some of the highest densities of Wasps in the world. This is due to their being no natural predators, a mild winter and lots of food. Wasps can be unwelcome pests at picnic and barbecues, especially during the hot summer months, and their stings can hurt. The venom from a wasp sting contains several toxins that can cause a hypersensitive or allergic reaction in some people. Wasps sometimes build their nests in residential properties and in or around homes or buildings.
If you notice more or larger numbers of Wasps in an around your property there is a high possibility that you may have a Wasp nest.
Wasps can be very dangerous and we highly recommend that you or your family DO NOT attempt to remove the wasps yourself or go near the nest.
CritterKill has the correct safety equipment to deal with the wasps and their nests and should be called in the first instance to deal with them.
Treatment Preparation: Close all windows and doors at time of treatment as Wasps can become agitated and aggressive towards humans and pets.
Be vigilant as it can take several hours for remaining Wasps to leave the treated area.
Ensure any children are made aware of the Wasps and do not put themselves in danger of being stung.
Rodent Control – Rats-Mice
For the control of Rats and Mice CritterKill technicians will be depositing clearly marked tamper free and child proof bait stations that may contain poisons or traps in and around your property. These will be placed in the locations where the rodents have been sighted or are suspected of frequenting.
These bait stations may be required to be left at your property for up to a week or more. Please ensure that these bait stations are not touched.
